<p>The ATFT Foundation funded 2008 PTSD study <strong>“Brief trauma intervention with Rwanda genocide survivors using Thought Field Therapy"</strong> has just come out in peer reviewed <em>International Journal of Emergency Mental Health</em>. The study’s two-year follow-up will be submitted for publication at a later date.</p>
<p>This study was the first of the ATFT Foundation’s PTSD studies, demonstrating an effective model for large-scale trauma relief. In 2009 a second study with this same model was completed and will be submitted for publication soon. It included a one-year follow-up and will also be submitted for publication.</p>
<p>The TFT (formerly ATFT) Foundation will be purchasing reprints. These reprints will be available from the foundation through <a href="mailto:Joanne@TFTFoundation.org">Joanne@TFTFoundation.org</a> .</p>
<p>The full citation is:</p>

International Journal of Emergency Mental Health, 13 (3), 161-172.</p>
<p>The third study, demonstrating this same model for large-scale trauma relief will be completed in Uganda in June of this year. Suzanne Connolly received a grant from ACEP (Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology) as seed money for this year’s study. The remaining funding will be provided from the three organizations providing the team: TFT Foundation, (USA), ATFT Foundation UK, and the Mats Uldal Humanitarian Foundation (Norway).</p>
<p><strong>Our join objectives for these studies are:</strong></p>
<p>1. To continue developing and scientifically validating a model in which local community leaders can be trained to treat community members in the aftermath of large- scale disasters, especially in regions where trained professionals are scarce.</p>
<p>2. To relieve the distress of those suffering from trauma and promote Post Traumatic Growth (PTG).</p>

<blockquote><p>I am a survivor, emotionally and also literally, of many events.  On the other end, the positive side one could say, I know myself to possess many talents and gifts I could share with humanity. I am 69 and did practice psychotherapy (MFT license) for several decades and also lectured in several universities and colleges. Even then I always had to conquer my anxieties 'to perform,' but my creativity, circumstances and a sense of mission did pull me through then. I have relocated in many countries in the course of my life and during  the last decade, after a painful divorce I emigrated to Israel where I thought I'd live my last years . Then a  lucid dream instructed me to travel to Thailand, and so I did, since I feel guided to follow the directions of my deep inner spirit.  There is definitely a spiritual component to my life, one not bound by formal religiosity.  I came back to the U.S.A. in 2007, already in my sixties, and the stress of relocating and trying to find  a way to generate an income in this  strange new (and often toxic) world  seems to have gotten the better of me, at least for now.  I feel under great stress as my money is quickly running out and I seem to easily self sabotage. I know better but...</p>
<p><strong>I believe many of the other issues I have could easily enough be tracked  to the initial life traumas experienced as a holocaust child survivor.</strong>  I finally have completed the questionnaire to send to Joanne and noted some of those issues there. In the last few months, my suffering has increased greatly, as I am now living in an area where it seems that, increasingly so in the last few months, sirens are howling and homelessness is increasing. With all my degrees and experience I have not been able to activate my professional life in spite of some good efforts. I am now in the midst of moving out of my present situation and hoping to get some emotional relief and find a place more conductive to my healing, I need to relate more to the beauty of nature than to the social insanity  I see being so accentuated in the "city". I  hope to quickly get back on my feet, so to speak, and get well beyond all my previous expectations.</p>
<p>When I tap, I experience a definite relief from moments of fear and panic, but then the suffering created by my anxieties  comes back to me and I have to do it again. I hope that my upcoming session with Joanne  ( I have completed the questionnaire and will fax it as soon as I can get to town this afternoon) will change much of that. However I am so low in outer resources - money mostly but  also finding  a new place to live and work from there - that until I find the inner and outer openings that will allow me to generate  enough abundance and resources,  I won't be able to schedule and pay for additional private sessions. Still,  I hope that once you familiarize yourselves with my situation, you'll be able to direct me to the appropriate literature on your website and I will also lose my fear (shame? guilt?) of asking for help.  I reviewed some  of your 'products' ( audio tapes etc.) and I am impressed by the great potential available.</p>
<p>I am equally aware that you are working with trauma victims in the whole wide world's war ravaged locations and this feels really good to me. It fits with my highest ideas.  I hold on to good hope, the hope to learn  to return to who I truly am, start rising out of the muck and shine <img src='http://www.rogercallahan.com/news/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' />  ... as  I feel I am destined to.  As my  last statement here, I want to share with you that I feel it is not solely a personal healing I am after, but a generational one . I am one who believes that as one heals oneself, one heals several previous and future generations. At least in my own mind and heart, the much needed generational healing of the people I come from ( my original Jewish tribal connection) is intertwined with the wider universal human condition ... But I better  stop here and now before I find myself going deeper into speaking of the present metaphysical dynamics  of our planetary and cosmic existence, one  favorite topics of exploration  of mine.</p>

I am currently trying to work out some medicine, but in the meantime, I am desperatley looking for some relaxation techniques. Also, even when I have daily medicine, my doctor says that I will need some techniques also.</p>

I do it every morning when I wake up, then I am allowed to have three ten minute breaks for tapping at school. <strong>I just started doing the techniques a few days ago, and they have been astonishingly helpful!</strong> Generally, I do not even need all my breaks at school because my day started out calmer. <p>The need for simple, effective self-help ways to heal is growing every day. Disasters, wars, uprisings, and turbulent economies around the world all contribute to our levels of anxiety, stress and poor health. TFT, the original source of tapping, continues to meet the healing needs of many people, through our expanding trainings, self-help products and humanitarian relief.</p>
<p>A clear example of this need was seen in Cairo, Egypt in the last few months. The chair and secretary of our UK ATFT Foundation, Dr. Howard Robson and his wife Phyll were in Cairo as Dr. Robson was doing some consulting work for the Royal College. Phyll told me she was using TFT daily as they heard gun shots and witnessed the horrors of the events unfolding outside their hotel room. We are so glad they have now returned home to the UK safely. They will be leading our TFT Foundations’ trauma relief mission to Uganda later this year.</p>
<p>We are very excited as we provide TFT to more people, in additional languages and countries in 2012. Early this year we launched our Spanish web site. And now, our TFT Boot Camp Self-Study package is being translated into Spanish and will be available by the end of March.</p>
<p>We are cooperating with local, established organizations in other countries to make TFT available to their countries.</p>
<p>As we expand TFT in the Spanish language, <strong>Fr. Luis Jorge Gonzalez will be giving the first TFT Boot Camp in Mexico City in June</strong>. TFT can be a wonderful tool for the people of Mexico to help with the trauma and fear from the widespread violence that is occurring.</p>
<p><strong>This summer we will be expanding further into Canada,</strong> working with our one of our new Boot Camp trainers, John Steuernol, to provide TFT in the greater Toronto area. Dr. Bob Bray will be working with him to offer an algorithm level training, and then we will provide a Boot Camp and Optimal Health training for those wanting to learn Voice Technology.</p>
<p><strong>Then, we are off to Sao Paolo, Brazil.</strong> We are working with an excited TFT practitioner and local institutions to bring a TFT Boot Camp and an Optimal Health training to Brazil. It will be our first time to visit this country and we are delighted for the opportunity...</p>

<p>Yesterday’s Wall Street Journal’s Corporate section warned about the stress of our workplace environments, citing “Burnout” or “frankly burned out” for some early retirements.  One of the articles says the stress and pressure has increased significantly due to globalization, stiffer competition, government regulation and the weak economy.  They say executive recruiters even measure a candidate’s ability to handle stress.</p>
<p>While these articles reference stress on the CEO’s of major corporations, <strong>we all face these same stressors to some degree.</strong></p>
<p>Add to these daily stressors and  we have a potential for burn out at many levels, manifesting in anxiety, fear, anger, frustration, hopelessness, depression, sleeplessness and fatigue among other symptoms.  All of these negative emotions affect our immune system and our ability to fight off the winter flues, colds and viruses. And, our workplace productivity suffers.</p>
<p><strong>What can we do about it? </strong>The article briefly mentions exercise as an important release for stress,  but offers no other suggestions short of removing oneself from the job.  Most of us are not in a position to retire.  We need a simple, daily routine to help reduce or eliminate the stress in our lives.</p>

<p><em>Solving the Mystery; By Suzanne Connolly, TFT-Dx</em></p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;">At a recent Conference on Panic Attacks, a speaker presented as a fact, that panic attacks do not have their origin in past trauma.</span></p>
<p>Speaker after speaker asserted that <strong>there is currently no cure for Panic Attack Disorder.</strong></p>
<p>While there are undoubtedly cases where this is true, I find that in most cases this upset in the sympathetic nervous system is rooted in past trauma and of course, with Thought Field Therapy is curable.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: large;"><strong>The following case study offers just one example.</strong></span></p>
<p>Yolanda's panic attacks were keeping her from her job as head of housekeeping at a nearby resort, and from her second job of babysitting her friend's children, and from participating in life in general. She had been referred by her Physician and I began taking a history in an effort to find some specific sources of anxiety to address.</p>
<p>Being around small children seemed to precipitate the majority of Yolanda's recent panic attacks. Being home alone at night, being around knives, seeing young girls at the resort where she worked, and driving at night seemed to trigger others.</p>
<p>The panic attacks began immediately after Yolanda had seen a news story on television where two young girls had been kidnapped and murdered. A search party had found the girls' bodies lying in a field. The murder weapon had been a knife.</p>
<p><strong>Before seeing the news story Yolanda had experienced only two panic attacks</strong>. Once while in Mexico, visiting her native village, she and her husband had taken a long drive to a forested area. It was nightfall when they finally arrived and Yolanda could not get out of the car to examine the forest.</p>
<p>A car had happened to be following them; Yolanda felt like she was fighting for her life as she screamed until her husband turned around and drove back to their village. <strong>She remembers her pounding heart and the feeling of unmistakable danger.</strong></p>
<p>On another occasion, while visiting her mother at her families' ranch in Mexico, her mother's big dog attacked a neighbor's small dog. <strong>Again: the pounding heart, the absolute terror. </strong></p>
<p><strong>Yolanda remembers nothing of her childhood before the age of nine.</strong> Her first memory is a memory of being on a bus with her mother and younger brother headed to California. She remembers everything about California: living a year with her aunt, the trips to the beach, getting toys, cloths, and attention. Everything seemed good and peaceful and normal. <strong>Yolanda tells of her year in California as if it were a story from a fairy tale.</strong></p>
<p>After she and her mother and her younger brother returned to Mexico, it was different. Yolanda's father had never accepted her. Her mother told her it was because he didn't like girls. (But later, a younger sister was born and the younger girl was treated, Yolanda says, like a princess.)</p>
<p><strong>Her three older brothers were allowed to treat Yolanda harshly.</strong> She was not allowed to eat with the family and had to go outside when everyone else ate. She would sit on the roof and look at the stars, or sometimes; she would visit the homes of neighbors who would give her something to eat. When the family was finished eating, Yolanda's mother would make her a small tortilla filled with leftovers.</p>
<p>Yolanda would then clean up and do the dishes. Later Yolanda was required to cook the dinner as well. But still she would be banished from the home while the family ate. Often her brothers would throw the family cat on her food and play other pranks. Yolanda says she didn't think anything was unusual at the time; "It was just the way it was."</p>
<p><strong>I ask Yolanda about a scar that runs up her arm. </strong>She says that it happened when she was about eighteen months old. Her mother has told her that her brothers accidentally cut her with a knife. Her mother had reportedly heard Yolanda yelling and when she found Yolanda, there was blood running down her arm.</p>
<p>Yolanda and I wonder aloud if this could be related to the anxiety round knives that appeared after she watched the tragic news story on the television.<span id="more-325"></span></p>
<p><strong>Although Yolanda had been experiencing multiple panic attacks a day; at the time of our initial session, she could not bring up the feelings of panic during that first meeting.</strong> There was only anxiety about the panic. I had Yolanda just think about the panic attacks while we did Thought Field Therapy using Diagnostics.</p>
<p>Yolanda reported feeling much calmer during the week prior to our second session. However, she reported that some of the panic returned when, at work, she witnessed a little girl running from the creek to the parking lot. I shared with Yolanda what I was beginning to see more clearly. Since seeing the news story, the sight of a small vulnerable child seemed to precipitate a majority of her recent panic attacks.</p>
<p><strong>Even babysitting her friend’s children had been a source of panic. </strong></p>
<p>And there was the panic attack she experienced in Mexico several years ago when the large dog attacked the smaller dog. I asked Yolanda to think about what had happened when she was a baby, although she couldn’t remember it consciously and had only heard the story.</p>
<p><strong>Once again, we did Thought Field Therapy at the Diagnostic level.</strong></p>
<p>It is our third session and Yolanda reports having experienced a few mild panic attacks. She says they are much less frequent and her heart does not pound as rapidly. We talk about not remembering her childhood before the trip to California.</p>
<p>Based on what she does remember of her life in Mexico after the age of ten, we can safely surmise that her earlier unremembered years were also quite difficult.</p>
<p>I have her simply think about her life during those years, even though there are no conscious memories. I muscle test her saying “think of being between one and two years old”, etc.</p>
<p><strong>When I find weaknesses indicating perturbations - we use Thought Field Therapy. </strong></p>
<p>During that same session and after doing some tapping, Yolanda suddenly remembers a man from her village that had a baby. He is her parent’s neighbor. Her parents were the Godparents of the baby, but Yolanda gets a really creepy feeling whenever he visits. She has never liked him. She doesn’t know why. We use Thought Field Therapy as she thinks about this man.</p>
<p><strong>Yolanda has also brought along a knife. She takes it out of her purse. </strong>It is thickly swaddled in a white paper towel. She cannot bear to look at it even in its sarcophagus and she grimaces as she hands it to me.</p>
<p>By the end of the session and after addressing the knife phobia using Thought Field Therapy, Yolanda can look at the knife even when I leave the room and she is alone. <strong>At the end of our session, she picks up the knife entombs it once again in its mummy wrappings and smiles as she places it in her purse.</strong></p>
<p>Yolanda arrives at the office smiling. It is now our fourth session.</p>
<p>She has been chopping vegetables and she can open the drawer in the kitchen at work that houses the knives. As head housekeeper, counting the knives is one of her kitchen duties.</p>
<p>Yolanda reports that there is still a trace of squeamishness but it is not debilitating her or restricting her activities. Again, she takes the knife out of her bag but this time she, herself, unwraps it from its paper-towel cocoon.</p>
<p><strong>She smiles as if the knife were an emerging butterfly.</strong> We use Thought Field Therapy as Yolanda concentrates on the remaining traces of her knife anxiety.</p>
<p><strong>Fifth session;</strong> and there is still a little queasiness around knives. But Yolanda reports that its manageable and today she wants to talk about something else. She has been having no panic attacks; however a few days ago she awoke from a long sleep feeling extremely anxious. She had been working hard and had slept late. As we searched for clues Yolanda volunteered that there was a lot of work to do around the house that day and because she slept late it might not get done. If it wasn’t done, someone might get angry and she would be in trouble.</p>
<p>At home, Yolanda would not be able to go to school until her chores were completed. After school she could not do her homework until her chores were completed. If her chores were not done to her mother’s satisfaction, she would call Yolanda “Lazy” and her mother wouldn’t speak to her for several days.</p>
<p><strong>We did Thought Field Therapy while Yolanda stayed in touch with her anxiety around not getting everything done.</strong></p>
<p>At the end of the session she could think of chores uncompleted and feel at peace. We still have a few minutes and we again address the little bit of remaining uneasiness around knives.</p>
<p><strong>Sixth session:</strong> and Yolanda is feeling good and things feel normal again. <strong>Her Doctor has given her the go ahead to gradually go off her anxiety medication.</strong></p>
<p><strong>There are two remaining issues</strong> that Yolanda requests we address. There is still uneasiness when driving by herself at night in open spaces. And, relating to knives, she says that there is still a feeling like a “chill that passes across my chest” when she is around knives.</p>
<p><strong>It is very slight she says, “almost like a memory”.</strong></p>
<p>Today we address the phobia of driving alone at night through large open spaces. This is a long- standing anxiety. This anxiety preceded her recent episode of panic attacks. By the end of our session, Yolanda reports feeling comfortable with the thought of driving at night alone through open spaces.</p>
<p><strong>Seventh session: </strong>Yolanda has had no re-occurrences of panic attacks even though <strong>she has completely stopped her medication</strong>. Things are very close to normal. Yolanda’s father now lives close to her in a neighboring town. She miraculously loves him and holds no grudges. She takes care of him to a greater extent than do her three older brothers who live with him or close to him.</p>
<p>On one occasion, since our last session, Yolanda drove her father through open spaces at night, and although there was some anxiety there was no panic and she did not have to turn her car around and go back. She thinks life is good once again.</p>
<p><strong>After just a little more work, Yolanda has remained free of anxiety and panic for nearly a year.</strong> She no longer sends money and gifts to her mother in Mexico who never thanks her and has no time to talk to her. She no longer does what ever her older brothers ask her to do. When she hears herself set limits with others she laughs and says “Who is this? Is this me?</p>
<p><strong>Addressing past trauma, even unremembered past trauma has not only eliminated all panic attacks and traces of anxiety.</strong></p>
<p>Thought Field Therapy has helped Yolanda learn to take care of herself and to realize that her needs too are important.</p>

The need for alternative therapy has never been greater, and we continue to see thousands of new people each month coming to our website to get help with stress, anxiety, fear and trauma.</p>
<p><strong>In 2011, we focused on expansion of our live training programs throughout the world,</strong> for both the personal use of TFT as well as the use of TFT in helping others. This year, we are expanding to the Spanish language in Mexico, Spain and South America.</p>
<p><strong>We've also created new products and training for all levels of TFT.</strong> The ATFT Foundation, continues to provide humanitarian relief, research and education around the world. We'll also be releasing the ATFT foundation documentary demonstrating the model for large-scale trauma relief using TFT.</p>
<p>Now that I am confident in the future success of TFT, I've decided that it's a good time to make one last change.</p>
<p><strong>After sharing TFT with the world for over 32 years, I'll will be stepping back from the day-to-day operations</strong> to enjoy spending more time with my 8 grandchildren, and pursuing my hobbies of reading and enjoying the outdoors.</p>
<p>I'll continue on as Chairman of The Board for Callahan Techniques, and will no longer be involved in the day-to-day operations of the company. My wife and partner, Joanne, who has worked with me the past 23 years, will continue to keep TFT growing. I am fully confident that Joanne, and our the team of exceptional TFT trainers and advisors,  will continue to make Thought Field Therapy the leading tapping therapy.</p>

<p><strong>The January 2012 Issue of Bottom Line Health reminds us of the importance of minimizing stress.</strong> They remind us of the negative effects stress and cortisol (the stress hormone) have on our hearts. And, they state that on-going, low-level stress, from work, relationships, finances and even chronic health problems can increase inflammation in our arteries, increasing our risk of heart disease.</p>
<p>The article tells us of new research in a study of nearly 1000 men, showed that those who experienced three or more major stressful life events in a single year, had a 50% higher risk of dying in a 30-year period.</p>
<p><strong>All of the following physical and health related concerns are negatively effected by stress:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Increased blood sugar</li>
<li>Physical pain</li>
<li>Impaired memory</li>
<li>Weight gain</li>
<li>Sleep difficulties</li>
<li>Anxiety</li>
</ul>
